Download A Shot Through the Wall (2022) – Returning to this flawed system, there's a moment when Chinese-American officer Mike Tan (a nuanced kenny Leu capable of evoking empathy, especially since the script isn't afraid to let him make stupid mistakes not only out of desperation but ignorance), is suspended from power after the titular incident. killed a black man, had valid reason to feel paranoid as if his life was in danger. Maybe not the wisest decision; he opted to purchase a gun where the dealer explained that this particular firearm would not explode by accident. Whether this officer gave Mike a subtle dig or not (his gun exploded while removing it from its holster during a stressful situation in the hallway of an apartment complex), it didn't matter. Why is this weapon (or something similar) not standard for these officers? Maybe it's a funding issue, or maybe employers prefer officers to carry looser weapons.
In what could have resulted in a forced melodrama, Mike also dates the daughter of black captain Canada Walker (Ciara Renée), with both families on the verge of sitting down for a parental dinner meeting for the first time. Played by Fiona Fu and Tzi Ma, A Shot Through the Wall also does an admirable job of mapping out the history of these immigrant parents from the more traditional and discriminatory to the receiving group they look like today. That doesn't all work, though, as there's a subplot with Mike's sister hiding a secret from parents that feels as though it can and should be taken out of the narrative entirely without missing much. Similar to A Hero by Asghar Farhadi, A Shot Through the Wall uses its main swagger to explore the influence of social media and how they can be persuaded by publicity and media stunts (the film's interesting part involves Mike and Canada deciding whether they want to do an interview together as a shield for some racism accusations). Of course, the family's grief remains, with Mike also having to accept his responsibility.
